Steven Flowers, a naive young private, joins a song-and-dance unit whose job is to entertain troops engaged in keeping 5,000 Chinese communist guerrillas at bay. Serving under the flamboyant Captain Terri Dennis he discovers it takes more than just a uniform to become a man... First performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1977, this bawdy yet touching play with songs has been endlessly revived since, most recently in a highly acclaimed production by Michael Grandage at the Noel Coward Theatre in 2012 starring Simon Russell Beale. ‘The blend of end-of-the-pier vaudeville and political anger becomes powerfully expressive as the piece shifts between the concert-party turns and scenes depicting the unsentimental education of Private Flowers’ – Independent |
